Brutus’s Downfall In The “Tragedy of Julius Caesar” by William Shakespeare Marcus Brutus is the main character. “The Tragedy of Julius Caesar” is set in the ancient Roman Republic on the eve of the assassination of Julius Caesar. The play, Julius Caesar, is about a group of Roman senators who believe the only way to preserve the Roman Republic is to assassinate Caesar and to prevent an emperor from taking control of Rome and destroying the democracy of Rome. The play starts when Caesar returns from victory over the First Triumvirate and Shakespeare introduces the major characters of the play. Shakespeare used one element of the traditional tragic hero in which a person of noble birth is the tragic hero. Brutus fits this example of a tragic hero because Marcus Brutus’s ancestor Junius Brutus fought the Tarquin Kings, who were ruthless dictators and tyrants and kicked them off the throne and took away control of Rome from them long before the time Caesar. Junius then established the Roman government that was present in the time of Caesar. The government he founded made all Romans proud especially Marcus Brutus. “O, you and I have heard our fathers say, there was a Brutus once that would have brooked Th’ eternal devil to keep his state in Rome as easily as a king” (I.ii.158-161). The second element of a tragic hero is that they are suffering or will suffer a catastrophe during the course of the play. Brutus’s catastrophe is that formed an alliance with the conspirators and agreed to assassinate Caesar since he believed he would be doing it for the right reasons like to protect the freedom of Rome but the other conspirators assassinated Caesar for their own personal gain. “…Countrymen, my heart doth joy that yet in all my life I found no man that was true to me” (V.V. 34-35).
