Throughout the novel The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay, Peekay the protagonist, describes the hardships of his life. Early on, he experiences major internal conflicts. The major internal conflict he goes through is separation. In the first few chapters of the novel, he is separated from his best friend who happens to be a chicken, Grandpa Chook, Big Hettie who he meets with briefly. Lastly, he is separated from his nanny and caregiver. Peekay does not understand why everyone is being ripped apart from him.
