Four Great Modern Buddhist Masters Throughout the years, many wise masters have come together to help unite the world and make a difference; not just for themselves but for others. As for the four great modern Buddhist masters: Thich Nhat Hanh, Seung Sahn, Maha Ghosananda, and Tenzin Gyatso (the 14th Dalai Lama), they all contributed and devoted their lives to being selfless, peaceful and promised to make a difference for their country and the world. Through their teachings and aspirations all four masters were able to succeed in their promises. No matter what, he would always sit and meditate and that is how he represented himself when he went to his teachings. With this quote, it is believed to be said that Sahn worshiped the idea of truly understanding religion no matter what kind. Giving in into something that you strongly believe in provides you with the ability to express yourself but only if you keep a clear mind. As he mentions, just saying the words will not provide the same satisfaction as if actually believing in the words that are chanted. Being open minded is the true teaching to chanting. These are the things which we much check in daily life (Dalia Lama). Although this quote is similar to the others, this one stands out the most. With every religion comes rules and guide lines that all seem to fit into similar categories. Respecting thy neighbor in Christianity is the same as “not to criticize others” from Gyatso’s quote. Also, being polite, honest, and performing your correct role in society in Confucianism’s religion is similar to Buddhism’s belief of attaining enlightenment. Gyatso prefers to have a set of guide lines for everyone to follow even if they are not Buddhist; his guide lines are almost as if they are just simply life check points. These four great modern Buddhist took into account that by living a meaningful life one has to attain the skill to worship and proceed with these teachings every day. Sometimes struggling in life gives one the fortitude to overcome such situations and learn how to properly move on. For these four masters, each had to encounter a disturbing situation in order to realize that they can alter the outcome by simply believing and taking action.
