Location: Charles Hardin (Buddy) Holly was born and raised in Lubbock, TX. His career had a failed beginning in Nashville, TN; and later launched in Clovis, New Mexico. A plane crash caused his untimely death at age twenty-two. Band Members: Buddy Holly started his career in a band called The Crickets which featured Jerry Allison on the drums, Joe B. Mauldin as the bass guitar player and Sonny Curtis as a fiddler and guitarist. However, Buddy Holly also had a solo contract. However, the recordings and records were unsuccessful. After being dropped by Decca, The Crickets began recording for an independent studio in Clovis, New Mexico. Labels started becoming interested and 1957 Brunswick released The Cricket’s first hit “That’ll be the day”. This was the first of their seven songs to reach the top forty hits; reaching all the way to the number one hit in the second half of 1957. There are elements of both country and rhythm and blues. The open style guitar portrays the country, while the twelve bar structure of the verses portrays the blues influence. The only instruments played are the electric guitar and tom-tom excluding the cymbals and snare drum. Lyrically, the song is a love song for a girl named Peggy Sue. This resembles many modern day country songs. The organization of this song is simple verse. Holly delivers each of the verses in a different way by changing the notes and rhythm. Although Holly repeats the words Peggy Sue several times, he varies the manner in which he sings the words. Some are short and in normal voice while other times Peggy Sue is long drown out with a nasally or deep tone.
