Many believed that it was unsinkable. The Titanic was a difficult ship to build due to its mass and volume, and many people did not look at the hardship of building the Titanic. The building of the Titanic consisted of many steps including the design, collecting materials, and the actual building of the ship. The design of the Titanic took many people and years. The White-Star line was hired to be the company to build the Titanic. “In 1907, the White-Star Lines rival, Cunard, launched the two fastest passenger ships, the Mauritania and the Lusitania” (The Build of the Titanic). White-Star had many special builders within their company. “That same year, the White Star Line's Chairman, J. Bruce Ismay, wanted to top Cunard, and he decided to do so based, not on speed but on size and luxury” (The Build of the Titanic). Builders used rivets to connect steel together. “During which time workers placed 2,000 steel plates to form the hull, held together with more than three million rivets” (The build of the Titanic). “The $7.5 million US dollars Titanic cost to build in 1912 would be roughly equivalent to $174 million today” (Saginor).
