Bullying is destructive behavior that belittles people considered or thought to be weak and vulnerable. The most commonly known forms are physical, emotional, verbal, and cyber. Bullying has been going on for as long as people can remember. No matter what form of bullying occurs, the effects can last a lifetime. Ask anyone you know and they are most likely able to have either seen or experienced it. People get bullied for what clothes they wear, weight, sexual orientation, race, how much money they have, and who they hang out with. In school, kids are prone to be more self-conscious than they usually are. Therefore, I think bullying is an issue among teens. They hope their unfortunate experiences can help kids/teenagers going through the same thing. One social Media influencer in particular, has talked about his past struggles lately. Shane Dawson is a 29-year-old “Youtube” star who has acquired two “New York Times Best Sellers”. In his latest book, It Gets Worse: A Collection of Essays one of the main themes shown is bullying. Growing up, Shane was a very overweight kid, who wore quirky shirts and wasn’t the richest looking person. One specific event is where kids who were in the Special Ed classes made him learn that he shouldn’t care what the bullies think of him. “Not caring what anyone was thinking about them. Not listening to the laughter coming from some of the ‘normal’ kids, and not even paying attention to anyone around them. As I watched, I felt inspired. I wanted to be more like them.” (Dawson, 35). Some of the most common reasons people get bullied for are the color of their skin, disabilities, or because they’re apart of the LGBTQ+ community. They get assaulted with slurs, are sexually/physically assaulted, and can even be abused by relatives. School is supposed to be a safe place for growing teens to voice their opinion and be themselves. They should not have to be scared to walk into school wondering whether or not today will be the day, they fall apart into pieces. Could you imagine how much this could affect someone mentally or emotionally? It would be heartbreaking to hear about it occuring every day. Not to mention, the correlation between bullying and suicide is very heavy. Kids can feel hopeless; like nothing will ever help them become happy.
