The Netflix original series—Thirteen Reasons Why—displays content that makes up the reality of the teenage realm. Despite being a representation of teenagers, the show is rated MA for mature audiences. The show depicts very sensitive topics that may not be sustainable for all viewers. As a result, both the show’s younger and older audience receives an impact from the issues discussed and shown. Bullying As of today, bullying has always had a place within the atmosphere surrounding the youth of many generations. This includes both a physical and mental putting down of others. She became a target, and carried a label that would haunt her till her death. This list led to Hannah being publically assaulted by two other characters, and added on to the pain she already felt from betrayal (especially from men). This issue cannot be taken lightly, in fact it should be highlighted and reported immediately. To include this topic in the series, meant that the creators wanted to showcase how even a small sexual comment, or gesture could contribute to an unfortunate outcome. The younger audience could take away that acting on this misconduct could quite literally negatively affect a person’s emotional well-being. According to AAUW (2018), girls who reported to be sexually harassed, have trouble sleeping, lose interest in school, and change their route home. “A highly gendered phenomenon that is directly and negatively associated with outcomes for girls,” (Dr. Omerod et al., 2016). Rape The subject, rape, remains one of the most sensitive topics discussed in this series. Throughout the process, emotions, and scenario presented, this is very strong material that not many viewers can handle. Therefore, people viewing this need to talk about it, and openly discuss what rape consists of. Episode 12: Tape 6, Side B. Hannah explains the twelfth reason she decided to end her life, and that reason is Bryce Walker. An athlete, and well-rounded student decides to take advantage of Hannah’s mental state and weakness.
