According to the CA Department of Developmental Services, making your own choices about the things you do is very important because it gives your life meaning. People must decide what matters most - a principle, another human being, or the right to express themselves. It is important to note that people have choices in these matters, and that lives are affected by these choices. It is important for people to make their own choices. For example, in the story, Bums in the Attic by Sandra Cisneros, “Some days after dinner, guests and I will sit in front of a fire. Floorboards will squeak upstairs. The attic grumbles. Rats. they'll ask. Bums, I'll say, and I'll be happy (Cisneros 4-6).” In the story, Sandra is upset that the rich people who live on the hills don’t care about those who live below the mountain. Sandra decides that when she is an adult she is going to ask bums in the street to stay in her attic. When people ask what the noise is in her attic, Sandra is gonna say that they are bums and smile about it. This shows that Sandra is indifferent to other people's opinions about her. Julia says her full name slowly. Julia says her name, saying her full name shows her heritage. Julia shows her heritage by expressing herself to her friends.
