By the Waters of Babylon Characters The two main characters of this story were John and his father. Some minor characters are John’s brothers, the hunters. John is the protagonist of the story, he shows a lot of courage and ambitions. John’s father was a priest and a minor character in the story because, of him John became a priest. The one telling the story of everything that was happening was John. Theme One of the themes for this story is that there is a price for knowledge. In the begged of the story John uses the word “we” that is how it first came to light that it was told in first person. Throughout the story John uses the phrases I a lot and he even explained how his father was a priest and how his journey to the gods went. On the seconds paragraph of the story John said “my father is a priest;I am the son of a priest.” This quote from the story made it pretty clear, certain that the point of view of the story is first person. Setting The story By the Water of Babylon takes place in the future. John is traveling east to the place of the gods, he makes it to a river called the Oudison River. Later on in the story John realizes that the river is actually the Hudson River and that the place of the gods is Manhattan. He travels around Manhattan and goes into some specific apartments, hr even visits Grand Central Terminal. John described the temples he saw, as mighty he mentioned how they were painted like the sky at night with its stars. He saw his final destination as a beautiful place even if it wasn’t what he imagined.
