Albert Einstein once said “The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything”. But what if someone who watches another person do evil cannot do anything? Everyone has different reasons upon their actions. Depending on the situation, one will make a choice whether to take action or not. These people are known to be bystanders. During the genocide we see different types of people. We see people that do evil, innocent people, and bystanders. A person who witnesses an incident but does not do anything is called a bystander. In 1980, El Salvador, the smallest country in Central America, suffered from of the bloodiest and long lasting wars for 12 years. There were problems that dealt with the economy and social statuses. During the 1970’s the tension increased causing an outbreak in war. The conflict in the war was fought between the Salvadoran government and the rebel army group FMLN (the guerillas). By preventing an uprising the “death squads”, form by the government, received military support from the U.S. This caused many deaths including women, men, and children. Children were then recruited in armies, causing children to become missing. Salvadorans were then obligated to leave their country for safety. At the end of the war the death rate was 75,000. The U.S was aware of what was happening. For 12 years, no one would intervene in the civil war of El Salvador. Throughout the years people tried to help whenever they could. In December 1980, American nuns came to El Salvador to help with people in church. A couple people try to help but others were mostly bystanders. Everyone watched while other died. During the genocide there are people who do not take part of what is going on. These kinds of people are called bystanders. Sometimes we even see good people who do not do anything to stop the genocide. A main for not taking part of the genocide is fear. People fear for what might happen if someone does try to help. In reality you can’t just stop a genocide. People believe that they won’t be as much help so they do not even try to help at all. Involving yourself to help means putting your life in the line. Instead of risking their lives they want to protect themselves and protect their families. Another reason why one might not take action is the bystander effect.
