The sociological imagination is a prominent concept that is used by sociologists as well as people that make an attempt to create a stronger connection to their societies. The concept was coined by world renowned sociologist, C. Wright Mills. The sociological imagination is essentially how we as individuals connect our personal lives, issues, and experiences to external forces in our society that mold our experiences (C. Wright Mills). For example, since I am a first generation American, there are resources and opportunities that have been enacted to support me through my education, such as scholarships. Along with my personal experiences, the community that I was able to grow up in has nurtured me along my journey to college.

Another way of thinking about ones history and biography being connected is by thinking of history as “public issues” and thinking of biography as “private troubles” that a person may have. This connection between individuals to society can either be visible or invisible. Meaning, one person may be going through one thing and find
In the “Promise”, Mills suggests that the promise of sociological imagination is rooted in the social sciences. Mills concluded that the role of the scholar is to distinguish and recognize the difference between the personal troubles of members of society and the underlying issues that effect society as a whole. Mills also states that ordinary people are too caught up in everyday events to acquire the quality of mind necessary to embrace biography and history. Not only to possess biography and history, but also the relationship between the two throughout society. Mills "promise" is the promise of sociological imagination, which is the ability to view individual experience, history and present events as a collegial whole.

When we hear about these individuals, it is easy to think that their problems are theirs alone, and that they and other individuals with the same problems are entirely to blame for their difficulties.
