Some Benefits of My CPO Academy Experience Upon returning to my job, I will bring new tools to better myself and my unit. After reflecting on my time at the CPO Academy, I thought about several important lessons and tools that I learned. These are things that I can use in the future to improve my leadership role in the Coast Guard and in life. Here are three experiences that I chose to discuss and take action on. First, is that I learned about goals and values. I learned what my goals and values are, how to meet them, and that they are what should drive me to make the decisions that I make in life. Without a clear vision of the things that I really want out of life, I’ll have a difficult time getting it. I learned to step back and determine what’s important to me, if I’m satisfied with them, and how to meet them. I am able to figure out the barriers to achieving my goals and work around them. This was a gift that most people don’t get the opportunity to ever experience. I was able to read how several of my managers, coworkers, and subordinates see me as a leader. It validated and allowed me to discover my strengths and weaknesses as a leader in my workplace. I learned that I am viewed as a very knowledgeable and polite person, but lack in areas of developing my subordinates and often not communicating enough to others. This feedback will allow me to focus on those weaknesses and work on correcting myself. I will be able to capitalize on my strengths and do great things, and also work on my weaknesses such as making the extra effort in effectively communicating to those that I work with. This will ultimately develop me into a much stronger, respected, and effective
