Caged Birds In The Awakening

89 Words1 Pages
In the awakening, caged birds serve as a reminder of Edna’s entrapment. The parrot insists that everyone “go away, for God sake”. Similarly Edna begins to desire solitude, pushing away her husband in order to find herself. Like the caged bird, Ednas movements are limited by societal expectations. Birds are cute to look at but not to touch, do not take out of cage Her wings are for protecting her kids and the ones closest to her, not for flying. In the end edna is compared to a pigeon.
