Serving others has been a consistent theme in my life ever since I first accompanied my parents to St. Joseph’s Diner, a soup kitchen in my hometown of Lafayette, Louisiana. Helping to alleviate hunger in the community instilled in me a self-perpetuating desire to serve others and that motivation grew with youth ministry and spiritual leadership involvement throughout high school. It was not until my first job at a health club named Cajun Fitness, however, when this motivation lead me to healthcare.

As a Cajun Fitness employee, I was responsible for initiating new club memberships and for providing fitness or dietary guidance to new clients. Effectively fulfilling this role rested upon my ability to create a comfortable and non-judgmental environment for clients to communicate their goals and concerns. Supporting others through personal challenges in this context was especially rewarding because it superimposed my passion for human biology. The son of professional biologists, my parents instilled in me a deep appreciation for the intricacy of living systems which evolved into a passion for fitness and nutritional science. I possessed poor learning habits that were informed by a lack of confidence and challenged by the time constraints of working multiple jobs to meet the demands of financial independence. Failure is a humbling place to cultivate confidence and success, but it provided me with invaluable insight. The introspection and responsibility I gained through failure helped me to redefine myself academically and bolstered confidence rooted in humility and discipline. I now emphasize these insights to my students as a science and standardized exam tutor.
