Cake’s performance at The Landing Festival convinced the audience to love them madly. They were the main act of the day, and rightfully so. Despite John McCrea’s case of bronchitis, Cake’s performance at the inaugural year of the festival, held on September 26-27, 2015, at the South Shore Marina in New Orleans, was unforgettable. The performance was largely unaffected by the ailment suffered by the lead singer, Cake still managed to leave the audience in awe after the show. This show was enjoyed by everyone in attendance: small children with their parents, teenagers, and even a few older couples bopping along to the music. Galactic and Tipitina’s threw a festival that kept the crowd entertained all day long, despite the slight awkwardness of the venue. The venue was the South Shore Marina on the coast of Lake Pontchartrain, the stages were surprisingly set up on an old landing strip. With small planes flying overhead, boats docked at the marina, and wide open space for concert goers to spread out, the South Shore Marina provided a different experience from the normal concert venue. While there were many interesting aspects of the venue, the downside to holding this festival on a landing strip is simple: cement. The pavement was hot and uncomfortable to sit on, which caused many audience members to set up foldable chairs. The chairs divided the crowd during Cake’s performance, leading to an awkward crowd environment. There was separation in the audience, which negatively affected the general mood of the crowd. Despite this drawback, The Landing Festival was a great experience overall. The local food trucks and beer gardens were a great way to keep concert goers fueled up. The marching band performance was an enjoyable bonus performance that reminded the crowd of Mardi Gras, and the firework show was a nice way end to a night of good music. Run
