I left my heart where my home is, and I found my alma mater to be my home. The Bachelor of Science degree from California State University, Los Angeles was the first, and yet the most extraordinary, gift I attained from home. What seemed distinct from a typical home, however, was the absence of my family’s company. Unforeseen financial predicaments surfaced three years ago, compelling them to depart from what once used to be their second home: the great city of Los Angeles. They migrated back to our first home country of Bahrain, the nation from which I learned that social health practices such as eating patterns, lifestyles, health promotion, and education are imperative to achieve wellness within a community. Stemming from my family background of health professionals, my motivation for applying to the Cal State LA Nutritional Science program reflects my conviction that nutrition is the cornerstone and foundation of public health, and that my life’s work is to continue empowering people with the knowledge and practice to enable them to flourish. My enthusiasm to both serve a diverse community and to learn about scientific approaches to improving physical and mental health have compelled me to travel from Bahrain to Los Angeles, from one home to another, in hopes of pursuing world-class educational opportunities unavailable elsewhere. Life as an undergraduate degree holder certainly did not subside my state of adversity as the time to find employment approached. Struggling with finding a means of financial sustenance after graduation, I fortunately received an occupation as a Microbiology Technician, advancing my knowledge in the field of food science.
