The Coolidge Value of Hard Work Calvin Coolidge was a president who exemplified many important values; he is well-known for his honesty, integrity, rationality, self-discipline, and hard work. Throughout his life, he always remained true to himself and to these values, even when times were tough and it would have been easier for him to abandon them. This often times seems to be a rare occurrence amongst politicians, especially those who are prevalent in government today, but that is just a testament to the type of man, and president, that Coolidge was. Coolidge demonstrated this value throughout his life, but it was especially prevalent as he gained his education and rose to power as a politician. Coolidge learned this value from his father, who he claims was “a good business man” and “a very hard worker” (Coolidge 9). In his autobiography, Coolidge explains that his father was always very supportive of whatever classes he chose to take, but “he was always solicitous to see that [Coolidge] diligently applied [him]self to it” (Coolidge 38). It is clear that this oversight from his father contributed to Coolidge’s educational success, as he is to have often completed “the work of a term in two weeks” (Coolidge 42). As Coolidge progressed in his studies, he noticed that his thoughts and actions began to mature. He contributes this transformation to the “result of hard work”; it was not an accident (Coolidge 59).
