As extraordinary technological achievements are constantly being made in modern society, some believe that a world similar to the one in George Orwell’s novel, 1984, is beginning to surface. It has been said that the rate at which society is advancing in the technological surveillance field is alarming due to the fact that the government has the ability to monitor the lives of its citizens closer than ever. Evidence such as cameras, smartphones, and internet monitoring proves that the government has the ability to scrupulously monitor the communication and location of individuals within modern society. When one thinks of their smartphone, they do not normally identify it with a means that the government uses to keep tabs on its citizens. Found in almost every school, business, and public area, cameras are constantly monitoring their surroundings, enabling to the recipient to study the actions of the individuals within the society. In his article “Long Beach Police to Use 400 Cameras Citywide to Fight Crime,” Winton states that “Long Beach police now have eyes everywhere.” Winton explains that, “The cameras are connected to a city operations center with computer terminals that can access an array of databases from the Justice Department, Department of Motor Vehicles, and other agencies,” which means that many different government agencies have the ability to monitor people’s actions without their notice. These “private security cameras are already connected to their owners electronically, and the department has been able to access such feeds when needed.” Although mass amounts of cameras can be effective in preventing crime, they enable the government to track citizens’ activities at all times of the
