My definition of rhetoric before the readings was simply: successful written or oral communication with a clear purpose & audience in mind. After completing the readings, I have decided that is not specific enough and does not encompass what rhetoric really is. The readings by Crusus, Channell, and Drucker helped establish a clear relationship between argument, “mature reasoning”, and communication as a mode used to communicate. Both of the readings provided a clearer understanding of argument and communication, key components to rhetoric, but did not change my definition until I read “The Rhetorical Situation” by Bitzer. The idea of a rhetorical situation, provided a clear application of the question: “What is rhetoric?”
Jack Nguyen AP English 3 30, July 2015 Nickel and Dimed Rhetorical Strategies and Notes Thesis: Ehrenreich’s personal use of varied rhetorical strategies allowed her to divulge the working conditions and struggles of the poverty-stricken class to the readers in order to provoke them to realize that something has to be done about poverty.. First Body: What: Allusion Pg. 2, Logos Pg. 37. How & Effect: Ehrenreich uses these personal, rhetorical strategies based on her experiences as a low-wage worker in the poor working class. The effect is that Ehrenreich is able to show the readers the conditions in which the impoverished work in and the daily obstacles that they face in life; also there is an appeal to logic and a reference of a poverty idiom. Why: Ehrenreich is deliberately using these rhetorical strategies to incite the readers about the fact that changes need to be done to poverty because it is a detrimental thing to society.

I feel that Matts main point is that we are built to be in tight groups (tribes) but at the same time we want to connect with all sorts of different people and cultures. He tells us in his article that he went on a trip around the world and made dancing videos with the people he met and what he learned was that people wanted to feel connected. He touches on the topic on how we have a ancient way of thinking when it comes to the type of people we socialize with. He uses the words primate, tribe, primitive, and the phrase caveman brain to show us how we still act today despite those times being thousands of years ago. He gives examples on how were connected financially and by simply being human.
Throughout the manifesto, “Time Ain’t Money”, by Douglas Rushkoff, deliberately creates a persona that is straightforward to address the views of CEO’s, and how they run their companies. Rushkoff designed this essay with specific sections intentional written in a certain order to communicate his message clearly. Throughout these ideas Rushkoff creates a key term to further express his idea. In the essay, Rushkoff uses a word, “presentism”, which he made up to describe the process of how, “society is focused on the now over the past, and even the future” (Rushkoff 114). In the essay, “Time Ain’t Money”, Rushkoff uses examples to show presentisms authority on culture change.
1.) Appeal to Emotion Paragraph 13 “Anyone with a computer and a modern can set up public sites featuring the perversion of their choice, whether its mutilation of female genitals, eroticized urination and defecation, bestiality, or featuring depiction of incest. She uses the appeal to emotion here by frightening her audience with an argument that is moving to convince them that these websites are real and out there for the public. 2.) Appeal to Reason Paragraph 17 “Technological change mandates legal change only insofar as it affects the justification for a law” (349).
Food is the fuel for humans, supplying energy and nutrients to get them throughout the day. But how has the way of getting food changed as a result of industrialization? Consider the tomato; it is ripe, farm fresh, and transformable to any desired recipe. However, today’s tomatoes are grown in places that consumers would probably not be able to locate on a map, ripened with assistance of ethylene gas, and picked while they are green. The process of obtaining food has undoubtedly changed.
Wiesel's use of his young self is in fact there to provoke emotion out of the audience and build his credibility. Yet, it is also there to represent the suffering children of today. The young boy is mentioned because it creates a sense of innocence. When Wiesel was young, he saw those American soldiers as his heroes, men who understood his anger and pain and showed compassion for him. Young Wiesel didn't know any better that those American soldiers had the opportunity to help him earlier but did not.
William Hazlitt composed his passaged, “On the Want of Money” to express that “one cannot get on well in the world without money”. Although many believe money is not necessary to be happy Hazlitt provides his audience with a substantial argument that money is needed to live happily. Within Hazlitt’s sharp excerpt, he uses several different rhetorical strategies to strengthen his argument and express his views on the importance of money. Money in fact, is very important to each person since in today’s world, money is used for everything. The problem is occurring is it is almost impossible to not desire or need money in our society.
During Super Bowl Sunday, millions of people across the globe tune in to watch the game while also gawking at some of the most popular commercials of the year. Coca-Cola presented its commercial “Love Story” during this past Super Bowl. They are known for having memorable and popular advertisements, this past one was no different. “Love Story” persuades the average person to drink a Coke with any meal along with the ones they cherish.
“In Aristotelian terms, the good leader must have ethos, pathos and logos. The ethos is his moral character, the source of his ability to persuade. The pathos is his ability to touch feelings to move people emotionally. The logos is his ability to give solid reasons for an action, to move people intellectually,” said Mortimer Adler. Many of the greatest artists use ethical, logical, and emotional appeals to prove their points.

In Budweiser's 2014 Super Bowl commercial “Puppy Love” it tells one. The purpose of this commercial like any is to convince the audience of the message its promoting. In the advertisement it uses the three tools of ethical persuasion: logos, ethos, and pathos.
What made you happy as a child? Children do not think of money as bringing happiness to their lives. The only things that matter are how they perceive pleasure, how much they feel loved, and what brings them joy. As people grow older, they may assume that the more money they have, the happier they will be. While there are many articles and research studies done on Happiness, I have chosen to write about Daniel Haybron’s article “Happiness and It’s Discontent,” and Diener and Biswas-Diener’s article “Can Money Buy Happiness.”
