The power and manipulation behind corporations have an affect on the universities and students. In the article “Can this Campus be Bought” by Jennifer L. Croissant explains in great detail how the power of money of big corporations can have a tremendous influence on students. The two big corporations, Nike and Pepsi investments towards the students give the university a pressure upon their education and because of this the student’s education is not being taken seriously. The first major concern that Croissant emphasizes is the importance of education in which big corporations that advertise their products to deceive students and their money affect their way of learning. Croissant states, “Because of our increasing involvement with commercial activities, we need to make sure that the university does not betray its educational values and objectives” (Pg.82). However, it seems as if the students were their own prisoners when it comes to purchasing certain items. Croissant states “For many students, to be a citizen is to be a consumer, and nothing more. Freedom means freedom to purchase.” (Pg. 83). Croissant also explain that the choices for freedom of consumption are constrained, which takes away the freedom of students wanting to purchase what they want, when they want, all because of these corporations wanting to be connected with the students and university. “Freedom of speech is elided by freedom of consumption, but no one seems to notice that the choices for consumption are extremely constrained.” (Pg. 83).
