Canada, a notion state in North America, is known for its multicultural society across the world. Like any other nation state, Canada went through stages of acceptance and denial throughout history, before adopting multiculturalism as a policy in 1971, through Pierre Trudeau, who visioned Canada as a multicultural nation. Historically, when Canada first embraced the policy: immigration, in order to create jobs and boost Canada’s economy, immigrants from Europe and America were most desired and favored. Over the past years, it can be seen that, “74.9% of Canada's growth came from international migration (immigration).” (Statistics Canada, 2021) The reason for such immigration success gained by Canada, is through the strategy of ‘selective immigration’, where immigrants are selected based on their linguistic/ education skills and therefore, fostering a more well educated democracy. Canada has been successful in uniting certain groups and nations within itself, by being a federalist government and civic nation (where elements such as freedom of speech, certain laws, etc, are key in making a society and not ethnicity). By setting up certain laws like the Charter of Right and Freedom, that pertain and apply to everyone, advances Canada in its goal to bring the different nations together. Other factors like Canada’s acknowledgment practices practiced throughout Canada, unites the nations together as they start to connect and unite to some extent due to acknowledgement of each other's groups.
