Human Problems = Human responsibility “Is there a God? Is he watching? Is she watching? Are they watching us?” (Miguel 1). These, sometimes, controversial questions are the first 3 lines sung in the music video Candles in the Sun by singer/songwriter Miguel Jontel Pimentel. Prior to these lyrics being sung are constant changing scenes symbolizing god, and or religion, such as cross symbols, church buildings, and a person in prayer, and alternating between them are scenes of guns, poverty in the form of damaged infrastructure and homelessness, and a person’s fist with the word “hate” tattooed on the knuckles. After watching that, my initial interpretation in regards to the main message of the video, is that the video is trying to draw a correlation between religion and the adversity of everyday life. Although after watching the video in its entirety and paying close to the lyrics, that is actually far from what the video is trying to portray. Although after releasing his first single through the Black Ice record label and not being satisfied with the way he was marketed, Miguel decided to switch labels. It was after this switch, and releasing his album called all is want is you in 2010, that his popularity in the music industry began to grow. Since Miguel is an R&B artist and the songs produced under this specific genre revolves solely around romantic love and or sex, it is understandable that majority of his songs also follow this trend.
