Conflict provides a lot to a story as it gives new ways of telling a story. In Cane River Lalitta Tademy tells us about the story of her ancestor's from the early 1830's to the late 1930's. In this essay the different conflicts in this story are going to be discussed and analyzed. Starting with Suzette's conflict with herself on whether to tell her mother about Monsieur Eugene raping her. Then Philomene's Conflict with Narcisse for sending her husband away to get her for himself. Finally, Emily's conflict with the white people in her society. This narrates the miserable life they lived in that time. It also shows the racism towards colored people.

Suzette a young 13 years old woman was raped by an old man and didn't have a say in what he had to do even though she had a lover of her own. She was constantly thinking on whether she should tell her mother about what had happened to her. This incident has affected her life, her children's and her grand children's. Suzette changed her mind about white people and men as a whole. She would whip her children if they called that guy their father. She would always warn her children and grand children not to go interact with white people. This shows Suzette's mind set on how she judges everyone for the mistake and dishonor of one person. …show more content…

She had this relationship to ensure a better life for her children,her family and herself. Narcisse wasn't completely honest with Philomene about his feelings and married a white woman which led to Philomene screaming at him which is when she found out that her daughter was still alive. Narcisse hit Philomene. Philomene became a really dull person and lost faith in life
