Geoffrey Chaucer was born around 1343 and died in 1400. His father, John Chaucer, was an affluent wine merchant and deputy to the king’s butler. Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales in 1392. The Canterbury Tales are many stories in one story. It’s a story about 30 people going to Canterbury to visit Archbishop Thomas Becket’s grave. The Canterbury Tales teaches readers about chivalry, greed and the corruption of the Catholic Church. Chivalry is a knight system about moral, religious, and social code. “There was a Knight, a most distinguishable man,/Who from the day on which he first began/ To ride abroad had followed chivalry,/Truth, honor, generousness and courtesy”(ll. 43-46).
