“Treat others the way you want to be treated” may seem to be reasonable in most cases, however, for some exceptions, people deserve forgiveness for their actions, even if the actions are immoral. In the film “The Time to Kill”, Carl Lee Hailey shoots two men for the brutal rape of his 10 year-old daughter. Although in the film, Hailey is given capital punishment for the murders he committed, he does not deserve to die. As the father of four young children and the only income source of the family, Hailey’s death would create irreversible damages to multiple people. Tonya was raped, beaten, hung, and thrown down from a bridge to be left drowned and dead. The torture is too cruel for anyone, not to mention she is at such a young age. Since the very beginning of the film, Willard and Cobb have several violent and racist behaviours towards complete strangers, especially to black teens. After their attempt to kill Tonya, they brag about the whole attack in a local bar with no sense of guilt or regret. When Sheriff Ozzie Walls arrives to arrest them, the criminals act superior and disrespectful to a law-enforcing officer because of his race. Willard and Cobb, who are account for multiple violent actions and racist insults, are very likely to commit the same or worse crimes. Even when they are in jail, there are low chances for them to learn their mistakes and rehabilitate. The criminals could be very influential in terms of promoting violence and racism. Crime rate is likely to increase if people learn that Willard and Cobb could easily get away from felonies and not pay for what they have done. Hailey does not deserve the capital punishment for killing two potential bombs; he has done an immediate and effective relief for the fear and anger aroused by those two in the
