&&“Love and Hate in Jamestown” is a book that tells the story of the U.S.’s first colony in the eyes of the American legend John Smith and through the accounts of the other settlers. The book starts with a small history lesson and eventually ties it in with John Smith, a soldier who eventually becomes a leader among the men in Jamestown. As we read, there is more detail to whom Smith is; where he came from, a small farm in London; what he went through, he became a soldier fighting in foreign lands with the Turks and getting caught; his family, the battles with his father that kept Smith home as an archer. Moreover, Smiths’ story rolls over to how he was able to go to Virginia; the colony in Virginia started out as a business investment until it was royal property in the 1620’s. Now, while going to
Jedediah Smith One of the many important people alive during the Westward Expansion was a man named Jedediah Smith. He was from a large family, two parents and 12 siblings. As a child, he lived in New York, that is, until he turned 12, when he moved to Erie County. Eventually, his family decided to pack up, once again, and head to Ohio. Though his time spent there was never documented, it is believed that Smith got a fairly good education and got a job as a clerk.
John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Patrick Henry and George Washington are all names that come to mind, when thinking about the founding fathers. The Catholic Declaration of Independence signer Charles Carroll, however, remains obscure when thinking of the founders of the United States. Carroll being less known does not make him less significant. Instead it cause questions to be raised as to what qualified him to be a founding father as well as what was his motivation. Carroll was born on September 17, 1737 in Annapolis, Maryland to Charles Carroll of Annapolis and Elizabeth Brooke.
One environmental factor was “I am going to point comfort, I tell the girls as I climb into the canoe Mrs.Laydon will meet me there. ”(p.210) This shows that Samuel
¨Wingfield and Kendall, living in disgrace strengthened themselves with the sailors and other confederates to regain their former credit and authority, or at least such means aboard the pinnace, to alter her course and to go for England.¨ In this essay, we will see that Jamestown and Plymouth are two very different colonies. They live in different places, have different reasons for settling, and probably have many reasons for them to come settle where they decided to settle. And yet, they also have similarities that bring them closer together because they mostly came from the same time of place looking for something. Even though these colonies have similarities and differences, they both still exude qualities that make them unique.
Samuel Adams graduated from Harvard in 1743, even though he was a very educated young man he struggled getting a successful business started because he had problems with handling his finances, but most young people face the same struggles. With no where to turn he joined his family business, and began to produce malt for brewing beer. In his spare time Samuel became an active writer with the independent paper, he was writing articles on the politics that were in the public. Politics became one of his interests in while studying law in college. Samuel was critical of local leaders in his articles because of their alignment with the British.
Captain John Smith had the greatest impact on Samuel's development during his time in Jamestown. Before Samuel came to Jamestown and met Captain Smith, he would lash out and did not know how to control his anger. So, Captain Smith teaches him to use one of his strategies to control his anger. On page 207, 208 it says," I hear Captain Smith's voice in my head: Samuel... do not let your anger get the best of you." Chanel it - let it give you strength to change things..." As you can see Captain Smith had the greatest impact of Samuel's development in Jamestown by teaching him to control his anger.
Edmund Kirby Smith, an influential figure for the University of the South, lived a long and full life. He was a southerner, a soldier, a businessman, a professor, and a devout husband. Although his legacy is a positive one, Kirby Smith’s remembrance is also controversial because he fought for the Confederacy, but he was remembered as a kind soul. The controversy becomes apparent when his life of service to the Confederacy becomes intertwined with the University who now accepts students of color, and so the struggle lies in how the mission of the University before the Civil War has changed for current students today. He made loyalty his life’s mission, and although he was loyal to the Confederacy he was also loyal to the mission of the University
One important aspect of this book that was new to me was Samuel’s struggle of child fatalities with his wife Elizabeth Adams among other severe personal troubles that Adams suffered. Puls continued on to display Adams’s difficulty in finding and maintaining a suitable career and Adams’s slow growth into politics. Puls heavily details Adam’s opposition of British taxation and ideals of independence for the Colonies (which at the time were very uncommon) with both the Stamp and Townshend Acts but completely ignores the question of Adam’s involvement in the Boston Massacre (beginning my suspicion of Puls’s motives) (Puls). Despite crudely ignoring the Adam’s possible role in The Boston Massacre, Puls moves on to explain Adams’s involvement in Tea Act, The Boston Tea Party, and Coercive Acts (Puls).
William Bradford was the former governor of the Plymouth colony and lived in the 17th century. In the book Mayflower, Nathaniel Philbrick explores what life was like after the First Thanksgiving. By looking at Bradford’s life, historians can understand what life was like in Plymouth. The main way Bradford's life can help historians understand life in Plymouth in the 17th century is religion. While Bradford was alive, he had an apparent zealous attitude when it came to his faith and God.
If I had a chance to travel back in time, it would be the historical time period of John Smith. I chose to interview John Smith because of his leadership ability to brave the travels from England in which to help the country become prosperous. The ability to lead the group of settlers in Jamestown to become successful even with starvation at the doorstep of the colony. John Smith was born in Lincolnshire, England around 1579 or 1580. His parents were George and Alice Smith.
I agree with you in what you said about him being the type of person who made you want to be a better person. He was very inspiring in his drive to better himself and succeed in everything he did (which was a lot). He had a very big impact on colonial America and has a continues to have an impact on life
During the early colonial times of America, many authors wrote about the things they experienced during that time. Two well-known authors of that period were John Smith and Anne Bradstreet. Smith gave accounts of what he experienced during that period through prose, whereas Anne Bradstreet wrote about some things that went on her life through poetry. Smith’s writings have the purpose of telling what happened and providing the facts, whereas Anne Bradstreet does tell what happened, but she also looks toward the future in her writings. John Smith, the leader of the Jamestown Colony in America, wrote a book named The General History of Virginia, New England, and the Summer Isles.
When the United States dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, shock waves were sent out to the world as everyone watched in horror of the destruction. The United States had developed a weapon that could give us control over the rest of the world. Other nations scrambled to catch up; specifically the Soviet Union. Eight years later, the ideological conflict between Communism and Capitalism solidified as the Soviets developed their atomic bomb. The sole principle preserving mankind from obliteration was the principle of the M.A.D. (Mutually Assured Destruction) doctrine.
Both John Smith and William Bradford were Englishmen who came to America and helped to found the earliest colonies in New England. They came at different times and for different reasons. Both tell of events during these travels in their written accounts, but these accounts show that the two men, as well as their goals, were drastically different. Captain John Smith, considered to be the first American writer, came to America in the spring of 1607. He had many adventures prior to the voyage to New England, and thought quite highly of himself, as is clear in his writings.
