An important incident in Blood on the River, chapter 4, is when . . Captain Smith is arrested and sentenced to be hanged. The charges are: “intent to overthrow the government of this mission, murder the council members, and make yourself ruler”(23). Captain Smith can not keep up the bad behavior he has shown the gentlemen, but has a hard time controlling his anger and knows he will have to at least act like he is respecting the gentlemen if he wants to get out of chains. He confides in Samuel and teaches him lessons he should have learned before he got himself in trouble, “Don’t let your anger get the best of you”(58). Captain Smith decides to stay calm and not let Wingfield overpower him, and to do this he writes down the story of his journey.
