***** the word limit is 300 words****** I would like to attend the Biomedical and Surgical Research with Boston Leadership Institute because I am looking to apply my knowledge and skills. I am interested in studying and becoming a cardiothoracic or neurosurgeon. I am interested in specializing in these branches of surgery because of its complexity. A malfunction in any part of these system impacts the entire body; and I am intrigued in how they work simultaneously throughout our lifetime. In order to prepare for this career path I have taken several classes and participated in programs that would provide me with the bases I need to understand the career. I have taken and Anatomy and Psychology college level classes and enrolled in the W.E.B …show more content…
Science is a broad term because of the several unique yet interrelated topics that falls under it, thus when I say my love for science is intense the statement is also broad. In terms of the sciences courses I have taken in the past such as Living Environment, Chemistry, Health, Anatomy, and Psychology I can say that science has played a significant role in my life. These sciences have provided me with the confidence and motivation I need to pursue a career path in STEM. I would like to expand my interest by exploring into the different branches of science that isn't always available to me. Even though I am more into biology science than other branches, I am open to new experiences and making myself more knowledgeable on a subject that means a lot to me. For example, in my freshman year of high school I applied for a Plants and Society 4-college Credit Course at SUNY Old Westbury; and I didn't know what to expect going into the class because the topic was fairly new to me. Although it was challenging because I had any background of the topic and the speed in which the class was moving, I enjoyed the class significantly. Not only did I acquire new form of knowledge I was able to pick useful skills I could use in college such as time management/organization and producing a well written research paper. Out of all the subject math have been the most difficult for me. Over the years, my goal in my math classes had shifted. I went from wanting to grasp the content and make it most useful to me, to wanting to achieve a high grade in the class. In any educational setting that should never be the goal, taking a class only for the grade means that I will forget the skills and content as the classes advances. This puts me at a disadvantage because each science courses build upon one another, they don't work separately. It is significant for me to work on my math skills because I want to pursue a career in STEM. Similarly, STEM subjects relate in some form; although I am mostly focused on the science aspect of STEM, medicine, math would be crucial to my career. In addition, I would like to attend the MathCamp because as a person I am persistent and determine. Whenever I am aware of my weakness, I continue to work on until I feel like I have reached my full potential. I feel like I'm giving up on myself and undermining my abilities when I simply accept my weaknesses and do not try to strengthen them. I have constantly been going to tutoring and different sessions outside of school to improve my math which has been helpful. For instance, starting AP Calculus AB was extremely intense because at the beginning of the year I had trouble adjusting to the speed and content. After
