Carelessness Revealed Carelessness is conveyed everywhere in todays society. Both The Great Gatsby and "anyone lived in a pretty how town" reveal this carelessness in their writing, but it is written in the past. F. Scott Fitzgerald, author of The Great Gatsby and E. E. cummings, author of "anyone lived in a pretty how town." Convey similar themes of carelessness through the use of imagery, symbolism, tone and reveal that in society there are many who are selfish, and lack care for others. Throughout The Great Gatsby, the author use color imagery and symbolism which describe characters and the setting, to set the theme of the book. One example of a color that the authors uses is green. The author uses imagery, symbolism, and tone to show this world. The imagery is, "She laughed his joy she cried his grief." (Cummings ln 14). The women in this poem is effected by her husbands feelings, showing her love for him. "One day anyone died I guess (and no one stooped to kiss his face) busy folk buried them side by side little by little and was by was." (Cummings stanza 7). When Anyone died, Noone cared when no one else did because they just buried Anyone and moved on with their self-absorbed lives. Through the use of symbolism the author shows time going by and that everyone in the society of "pretty how town" just goes on with their lives. "Women and men(both dong and ding) summer autumn winter spring reaped their sowing and went their came sun moon stars rain." (Cummings stanza 9).
