Hurley touches upon a myriad of varying potential causes for the decline of the NFL’s ratings in order to provide his audience, likely sports fans, with an idea as to what exactly is going on to create such a problem. Although Hurley notifies the audience of various factors that may be causing the ratings to go down, his argument lacks depth and credibility due to an evident lack of ethos. The similarities within the NFL and NBA are many, due to the fact that they are both multi billion dollar organizations, pay their players millions of dollars, and have millions of fans to cheer those players on. The differences are held in the wealth of the two leagues, how they distribute the money amongst themselves, and how they handle their image. When comparing the richest players within the two leagues, it’s easy to notice the difference in where they make the bulk of their money. This leaves NFL players making less money then the NBA in an industry that is worth over a billion dollars more. She supports her claim first by explaining the stereotypes the white culture have made about African American, then she says, ‘since the entire coaching staff for men’s basketball is traditionally male, the paradigmatic choices are black or white… the overall image is white” (Wonsek 453). Displaying that even if the team was majority consisted of African Americans, but during a sport game most the people are whites, and finally African American are overrepresented in sports advertisements.
