Carl Sagan (1934-1996) was a leading scientist who took on a major role in science with his involvement in new research, media, and his taking to authorship. Sagan is credited as the most famous scientist of the 1970s and 1980s, with his notoriety deriving from his popularity in the scientific community for his research and gained fame with the general populace from his ability to bring astronomy to more people outside of the field. For example, he was ale to identify dark shaded areas on Mars as higher elevated than lighter areas in the imaging scientists had collected. Moreover, Sagan 's accomplishments stretch beyond physical research of planets with his celebrity status in the media. He is mostly well-known for his television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, and he was known as a consultant for the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. However, the books he had authored also helped him gain popularity and added to his accomplishments. Such books like Other Worlds, The Cosmic Collection: An Extraterrestrial Perspective, and Contact had all been widely successful and allowed astronomy to reach more people who would have otherwise been unexposed to the science. Due to his ability to reach such a wide audience consisting of millions of people, Sagan had been known as a scientist working alongside the people and had been honored with many prestigious awards for his work, such as the National Academy of Sciences’ Public Welfare Medal. Alongside these major accomplishments, he also dealt with space exploration. Sagan had helped to found the Planetary Society, structured around the exploration of space.
