Carnegie Mellon University: Personal Statement

Growing up I have always been interested in engineering, but I never had the courage to tell my parents, because, for them and for my community, it’s a men’s job. It is frustrating to hear that I shouldn’t pursue Engineering, despite my interest and aptitude for STEM, simply because it’s “not a woman’s job”. However, an event changed my whole perspective. In 2014 I participated in protests against the corruption in my country, and there I learned that I can make my own decisions, so after that, I decided to talk to my parents about my wish to become an engineer and I managed to overcome their resistance. Having been raised in a community where woman don’t receive much respect I have always worried about what would be my career choice. For that, when I was looking for universities to apply it was essential for me that the one`s that I chose would chase equality of rights and inclusion. As an engineer I want to be able to find creative, interdisciplinary, and collaborative solutions to problems similar to those challenging my country and my community, like the Amazon Forest destruction, as an example, I want to integrate different areas of study such as economics and engineering, taking full advantage of programs like the Bachelor of Science program in Computational Finance (BSCF) and the Integrative Design, Arts, and Technology Network (IDeATe) program at Carnegie Mellon, to try to find a way to end the profit based destruction of the Amazon Forest, trying to put an end to Brazil`s current relationship between man and nature. This goal is essential for me to shape my future, because, with this in mind, I can take full advantage of Carnegie Mellon’s immense resources to help me solve those
