Carper’s four patterns of knowing can be identified within the case study. Empirical knowledge was utilized by employing evidenced based practice to guide nursing interventions (McEwen, 2014). The clinician was utilizing NCEP ATP-III target levels to guide their practice and was sharing the knowledge with the patient. Furthermore, the clinician had instructed the patient to continue their current statin therapy to treat her hyperlipidemia and scheduled follow-up appropriately. The nurse focused the conversation on the patient and her hyperlipidemia. However, in the scenario the nurse failed to effectively utilize personal knowledge. If the nurse had established a stronger nurse-patient relationship, then it would have made assessing the patient’s educational background, economic status, and social situation easier. Ethical knowledge remains essential throughout nursing practice because it is utilized to help nurses determine whether actions may be right or wrong (McEwen, 2014). An ethical concern in the scenario remains that the patient lacks the knowledge to understand her condition and its treatment. Furthermore, the patient lacks the resources or desire to proactively seek the information needed to treat her condition. To combat the issue, the nurse should begin by assess the patient’s education level and preferred form of learning. Next the nurse should deliver education about her condition, her medications, and the plan of care. Finally, the nurse should have the patient repeat the information back to the nurse to ensure the information was understood by the
