A hero is any person that is looked up to and admired for being either courageous, noble, or having outstanding achievements. A hero does not always require an action but it does require intentional decisions to be made. A person’s choices reflects upon them. Deliberate decisions that we make influence the person we are and whether or not we are viewed as a hero. Most of the time, however, actions are followed through with those decisions. Heroes make the decision to care for someone else and to stand up for what they believe in. They don’t do these things expecting an award or great recognition, but to make a difference. Everyone has a different view on who our heroes are, and one person's hero is not necessarily a hero in someone else’s eyes.

Druse is awaken by the mystical forces of an angel. The angel has fallen upon him to wake him up in time to discover the soldier on horseback across the ridge from the confederate side. It by result of fate that his father is the soldier on the horse, and then one that he has to shoot. Family also plays a role because Carter’s father joined the army only to oppose his sons act of treachery for joining the union. The casualties in the story are the horse and Druse. The horse is the one actually shot by Druse, but Druce is a casualty because he is just a victim of forces working against him. The force that gets him in the position that he is in is his exhaustion. Falling asleep at his post while on watch is a crime, but he couldn’t help it because he was just too tired. This is an agent of the war itself. It is tiresome and challenging. It is also this same agency of war that encourages him to reach the decision of shooting down his father because it was his duty and what needed to be done for his fellow
