Carthage and Rome were the biggest empires of the ancient era. I will show you how they differ in power and political system, I will provide the negatives and positives of each place and then I will compare them. According to Morey (1901),Carthage became a powerful trade empire; It was the great merchant of the Mediterranean Sea. Her political system was very similar to Rome. They had 2 chief leaders magistrates which is the same with Rome's consuls, and they had the council of elders which we could say that it is similar to Rome's senate. Comparing these two empires, we see that they were both equally in strength and resources even if they had some benefits and drawbacks too. For example Carthage was wealthier than Rome but Rome had a better organization. Because of the powerful trade to the Mediterranean Sea they made a big naval army. Rome didn't have a naval army but she had an effective one. The main strength of Carthage was her resources and wealth people while Rome's main strength were the people and her brilliant political system. The first one was ruled by Carthage and it was the western part. The second was ruled by the King of Syracuse and it was the southern part, and the last one was ruled by Campanian soldiers that had the northeastern corner and they were in the service of king Syracuse. These Campanian soldiers ravaged the surrounding country. After that, the King attacked them and destroyed them. . So, they had two choices; to ask for help from either Carthage or Rome. So they decided to ask it from Rome; Rome at first hesitate to help these rubbers but they knew that if they didn't assist them Carthage would do it. So Rome decided to help them and to take a part from Sicily too and that's the reason and the start of the first Punic War. When the war began the Roman knew that if they wanted to win Carthage they should defeat her in both sea and land. When the naval army of Carthage came to the Sicily they won land and took back what Rome has accrued.
