People with asthma have inflamed airways. As a result, they are more sensitive to things around them that other people are not, which are called triggers. There are numerous types of triggers and they can vary between people with asthma. Environmental factors can produce several different triggers. Environmental factors are characteristics or elements in an individual’s surrounding environment that can impact the survival or growth of that individual. Carbon dioxide can be found in planes and cars (our main source of transportation) in addition to human activities and power plants. The second irritant that would be prevalent in Duplin County is dust. Duplin County is a largely rural area and has a large number of farms. Large amounts of dust would be in the air during farming season. Chronic exposure to air pollution can cause unpredictable amounts of irritation in an individual’s airways as well as their lungs, thus causing respiratory issues. A second environmental factor would be allergens; these are things such as pollen, dust-mites, mold, pet-dander, grass, and certain plants or trees. Allergens can irritate the airways of those suffering from asthma when they come in contact with them. One main allergen in Duplin County is pollen, as I stated before it is a very rural area. It contains a large amount of plants, and trees. This in turn means large amounts of pollen are released into the air. The last environmental factor that can cause asthma attacks is the weather. One reason being geographical location and resources provided to the area. For example, North Carolina is known for their success in the tobacco production industry. Most tobacco manufacturers use fire as a method of curing the tobacco because it is a faster method. Consequently, the combustion from the fire pollutes the air, causing the air to be muggy. Combustion is a key component in the exacerbation of asthma in children and adults. In contrast to many metropolitan areas, Duplin County may not have the necessary sanitation funds to properly ensure the safety of its citizens. Similar to other rural counties, crime-rate is high, and most of the time majority of the county budget is spent on effective ways to keep the county safe.
