Background
Mujeres Unidas is a nonprofit organization based in San Antonio, Texas. This organization is mostly provided by volunteers. Mujeres Unidas goal is to provide education, counseling, and support to local bilingual/bicultural communities affected by HIV/AIDS and other health concerns. Formally known as Mujeres Unidas Contra el SIDA, our organization was founded on World AIDS Day, December 1, 1994, by former Executive Director, Yolanda Rodriguez-Escobar. Her vision was to fill the gaps in services for Latinas living with or directly impacted by HIV/AIDS. Mujeres Support Group which provide services for Spanish speaking social support group for those either diagnosed with or affected by HIV/AIDS this includes Friends Without Boards. Thirdly this program offers Godmothers/ Godfathers a group of men and women who unite to deliver education and support to neighbors, families, individuals and groups on general health topics, including HIV/AIDS. Next this programs offers Platicas which is a HIV prevention and education through community outreach. Lastly the program offers a food pantry for the clients they serve. The food pantry is normally consist of canned items to serve families in need. Mujeres Unidas offers support groups for women and their families, programs for their children, and information about preventing HIV/AIDS and staying healthy after diagnosis. Because of the familia approach they offer a wide range of services to support the Latino community. Mujeres caters to the Latino community by providing the option to host their own support group in home through the Platicas project. The Platicas project appears to be active in private homes and also at building headquarters, where Latinos/ Latinas are implemented into the Mujeres Unidad family and encouraged to share their concerns and struggles with AIDS/ HIV in a welcoming atmosphere. Women United Against AIDS actively recruits Hispanics and bilingual staff as volunteers. The board of directors is heavily involved with the agency and honoring its mission. Mujeres Unidas honor their volunteers with an option to set up a session to share their stories and experiences in hopes to educate and offer support to individuals in similar situations. Mujeres has a marketing team that continues to bring awareness to the agency through sponsorship, raising funds and donations that contribute to food and clothing items.
