Mario Lemieux Do you know what Atrial Fibrillation is? Mario Lemieux is known as one of the greatest hockey players to ever play the game. He beat the odds by setting records even with Atrial Fibrillation. This is Mario Lemieux and his disease of Atrial Fibrillation. Mario Lemieux was drafted first overall in the 1984 NHL draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins. During his first season in the NHL Lemieux scored 100 points, making the All Star team and winning MVP. He missed fifty four games during the 1990 and 91 season. Despite missing all the time Lemieux made it back to the team just in time for the playoffs, where he led the team to a Stanley Cup and another MVP. The following year Lemieux and the Penguins won their second straight Stanley Cup and once again Lemieux won MVP. During the 92 and 93 season LEmieux was diagnosed with Hodgkin disease which caused him to miss 20 regular season games. The following season Lemieux led the league in goals scored and was named MVP. However the following season Lemieux missed all but twenty two games due to back pain and fatigue. He skipped the 94 and 95 season to recover from the brutal radiation therapy he had been through for his Hodgkin diagnosis. In 1997 Lemieux decided to retire at the age of thirty one. When beating rapidly the heart can beat up to six hundred beats per minute! With every year a person with AFib grows, so does the chance of a stroke. The first step in curing AFib is to identify what he cause is. Depending on the cause, the heart can possibly be electronically shocked back into regular rhythm.
