Background statement: Heritage Valley Medical Center has had a wonderful reputation for providing excellent health care services to their community. Initially, their community was 80% Caucasian, 40% African American, and 5% Hispanic. However, in the last 5 years, the population has changed to more minorities and the whites have moved out to the suburbs. This caused the Center’s occupancy rate to go down 40% because many of their traditional, more affluent, private-pay patients had left the neighborhood. To bring in revenue, they campaigned to bring in more Medicaid patients.

In her poem “ My Husbands Back”, Susan Minot describes how she feels being a mother, and wife on an emotional and bad day. Minot writes this poem as the speaker and the tone is very heartfelt and sorrow at times. From the title of this poem we can gather that the poem is about a husband and wife and their relationship. “My husbands back” was actually very close to home at times in the poem and made me think about my relationship with my husband and even about my relationship growing up with my father. Minot uses line breaks, metaphors, connotation and figurative language in this poem.
One factor that influenced my decision to apply for Stony Brook Physical therapy Program is its access to valuable resources. Stony Brook has access to hospitals such as the University Hospital and the Long Island State Veterans Home. The close relationship that Stony Brook share with these hospitals will provide an environment in which I can learn more from the physical therapist. Stony Brook is also located on long island. With Stony Brook being Long Island 's comprehensive academic health science center, getting my education from this university will be a great opportunity.

The National Scoliosis Foundation was founded in 1976 by Mrs. Gowen. In 1974, Mrs. Gowen showed extraordinary care and compassion towards Atlabachew Tedla, a 17 year old Ethiopian student suffering from the effects of a severe 143 degree abnormal lateral curvature of the spine (scoliosis). With the goal to spread awareness Mrs. Gowen’s compassion and generosity extended beyond Atlabachew Tedla to benefit thousands of children in Massachusetts and tens of thousands of families throughout the world.
In August of my first year of medical school, I received an email offering an opportunity to pursue neurosurgical spine outcomes research. Unbeknownst to me, this email and correspondence would ultimately lead to my decision to pursue a career in neurological surgery. I had been involved with basic science research every year of my undergraduate career. Yet I had never been exposed to clinical outcomes research and thought this would be a great opportunity to learn a new skill set and explore a different avenue of research. The first projects I worked on involved patient-reported outcomes on Failed Back Surgery Syndrome.
Chiropractic is a system of treating disease by manipulation of the vertebral column. Chiropractic is based on the theory that most diseases are caused by pressure on the nerves because of faulty alignment of the spine. Therefore, nerves are blocked from transmitting to various organs of the body the neural impulses for proper functioning. Meanwhile, Western medicine has not accepted this theory as a scientific fact yet has accepted it as a complementary treatment for certain back conditions to ease the pain.

Part I: In 250 words or less, express your motivations for choosing Kinesiology as a major and how it relates to your future goals. I have wanted to pursue a career in the medical field since I was a child. In high school, this passion was put to the test after I suffered a bilateral hip injury that made mundane tasks like going up stairs, getting dressed, or even standing a painful and taxing ordeal. I was advised to quit all physical activity by my team of doctors, but as a three sport athlete for me that was not an option.
I work for an average of thirty hours a week at San Clemente Physical Therapy as a physical therapy aide. I work under the direct supervision of three physical therapists. Over the past three years, as my skills and knowledge have increased, I have been given increased direct patient care responsibility. Over this period I have earned four raises in my pay-scale and have become an integral part of San Clemente Physical Therapy team. At work I treat patients every day while interacting with and learning about my community.
