School Profile: University of Texas at Brownsville The University of Texas at Brownsville was established in 1973. They are a non-profit higher learning institution located in the city of Brownsville. The University of Texas at Brownsville was previously partnered with Texas Southmost College, but they become an independent university in 2011. The urban campus of 524 acres hosts around 11,000 students every year. A beautiful lake flows through the center of the growing campus. The university was built on the historical Fort Brown, which was an old Army outpost during the pioneer times, so the buildings are old and the architecture is quaint. Other divisions include the College of Biomedical Sciences, the College of Applied Technology and the College of Science, Mathematics, and Technology. The university hosts academic programs that have received state and national recognition. For example, the Center for Civic Engagement promote community engagement, while the Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy Research studies astrophysics. The Center for Biomedical Studies conducts medical, biological and biotechnological research. The university mostly offers bachelor’s degrees, but they have started to offer graduate degrees in business, sciences and education. Many of the students hail from South Texas, but there are also many international students from Mexico. Over 90 percent of students are Hispanics from the local region.
