In Edgar Allen Poe’s short story, “Cask of Amontillado,” Fortunato asks Montresor if he was a Freemason.The Freemasons are a group that were successors to the Knight’s Templar.The Knight’s Templar was a military order founded during and for the Crusades.The Order was founded in 1118 when they approached, recently crowned, King Baldwin II.The Knight’s Templar was a group founded on the idea of protecting the Christian pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem. On King Baldwin II’s accession to the throne,he was approached by nine knights,one’s such name was Hugues de Payens,(History.com) asking if they could form and new order of knights. (Young Ch.5) There were 10 crusades in total if the People's and Children's Crusade is counted.The First Crusade was from 1096-1099. The goal was to gain control of the Holy Land. It was successful by setting up the Kingdom of Jerusalem and other counties.The Second Crusade was from 1147-1149.The objective was to regain the county of Edessa and capture Damascus. However it failed these goals.The Third Crusade or “The King’s Crusade” was from 1189-1192. It’s objective was to recapture Jerusalem but due to issues, with Frederick I of Germany, Phillip II of France, and Richard I of England, the Crusade was unsuccessful.The Fourth Crusade was from 1202-1204. The goal was to capture the city of Constantinople. The main force did not arrive,but they did capture the Byzantine city and created a short-lived Latin Empire.The Fifth Crusade was from 1217-1221. The goal was to capture Egyptian cities and major ports.They captured the port of Damietta and were offered all the holy cities in return for withdrawing from Egypt.The crusaders mistakenly refused. This was because Phillip had the Pope Boniface VIII kidnapped for him refusing for the need of the clergy to pay tax. The Pope succeeding him was Pope Benedict XI who also was a threat and died mysteriously after gaining Papacy.Not long after Phillip applied to join the Templars which they refused.(Young Ch.5)The Templar viewed Phillip as a threat because of his expulsion of the Jews and Italian bankers in France.Phillip also wanted the clergy to pay tax.(Cavendish)Phillip eventually made accusations of treason and heresy and ordered all 5,000 Templar Knights to be arrested.These knights were tortured until they confessed to their accused crimes. Then after confession they were burned at the stake.(Young Ch.5) They were eventually disbanded by the Papal Bull in 1307 at the council in Vienna, Italy. (Medieval Times) They were eventually succeeded by the Freemasons. The start of the Freemasons were because of the fact that people believed the Templar possessed the Holy Grail and the Shroud of Turin (cloth Jesus was buried in) during their existence.
