Cat on a Hot Tin Roof Critique Prep Tennessee Williams, formally known as Thomas Williams II, was born in Columbus, Mississippi in 1911. He revealed that his parents’ marriage was complicated, which would eventually encourage him to write. Some characters in his plays represented his mother and father. Amanda Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie represented his mother and Big Daddy in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof represented his father. Williams decided to become a playwright after seeing a production of Ibsen’s Ghost in college. After graduating, he moved to New Orleans, which inspired most of his later writings. A lot of people spoke highly of Williams when he received his first Pulitzer Prize for A Streetcar Named Desire. While Williams dominated, he also received more award for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Years later, Williams turned to drugs after receiving bad reviews on some of his plays. He was later admitted into a hospital. He soon recovered and began to write plays, such as Memoirs. Williams was found dead in a hotel room surrounded by drugs and wine in 1983.

One of the controversy was Alcoholism. Brick used alcohol to “escape” from his life and help him cope with the loss of his friend, Skipper. Perhaps this was William’s way of showing his own way of coping mechanism with his hard times in his life. Homosexuality was also a main controversy in the play as well. This controversy involved Brick and Skipper. Most do not know that Brick and Skipper had a romantic relationship until they read the original play. Some people thought the play went too far, others think that it didn’t go nearly far enough (Billington). Brick denies their romantic relationship, but he can’t get past Skipper claiming his love for him over the phone before killing himself.
