Joseph Heller's brilliant debut-novel, Catch-22, is a genuine piece of Classic American Literature. The longevity of the novel's following is nothing short of impressive for being a satirical work. It's also very accurate content-wise since it was based on Heller's experience as a B-25 Bombardier during World War 2. The novel has a humorous approach to providing an anti-war message by mocking war and those who fight in it. The political message is expressed clearly but without the dryness found in some other works.
