In the short story “Catch the Moon”, Cofer helps bring out the multiple ways love can be seen. The character, Luis, is transformed over the course of the story by dealing with love in multiple forms which gives him motivation to do the right thing.
Luis is the bad boy stock character and isn’t motivated for anything until he meets a girl, Naomi. He needs to help her and puts it forth with the utmost importance. He feels the grievance from his mother and and is motivated from the love he has for his mom, but not only that kind of love, he also is motivated from the love he feels for this girl, Naomi. With the new found motivation he realizes that he has the ability to be a strong worker that doesn’t need other, more reliable people to watch over him to make sure he does the work. When Naomi got out of the car Luis saw “ the most beautiful girl he had ever seen”. Naomi had seen him before, when he was going through a hard time, and he saw her but did not notice her. “He did see a black girl there that didn’t try like the others to talk to him, but actually ignored him”. Naomi probably knew how hard a time it must be to have just lost a parent and she left him alone and didn’t want to bother him in this depressing time. She realized how hard it can be to be strong and never cry and when she saw him crying she didn’t make fun of him. “At first Luis felt angry and embarrassed, but she wasn’t laughing at him. She told him with her dark eyes that it was okay to come closer. He walked to the window, and she held up the sketch pad on which she had drawn him, not crying like a baby, but sitting on top of a mountain of silver disks, holding one up over his head.
