The book “The catcher in the rye “ by J.D Salinger shows a teenagers journey through horrible days of misfortune. The main character, Holden, have interesting ways of dealing with his problems. It is anything from loneliness to his way of alienating for self protection. J.D Sallinger has chosen a special way of illustrating Holden’s life in forms of an iceberg, the inside of him is much larger than you think. Holden knows about how people feel about him but does not want to realise it and therefore uses a special technique to protect himself. His way is to call everyone a phony, he alienates himself. Holden feels like he need a way to shoot people but not with words while putting on his hat.”I shoot people in this hat.” His hat is a hunting hat. In a way it is pleasant for him, to shoot people because of the amount of people, especially at his former schools, that considers him to be an outsider is a worryingly large amount. His hatred for everything is what caused the loneliness. There are only two people that have liked Holden for who he is and that is his sister Phoebe and his brother Allie, all the other people might have liked Holden but also complained a lot about him and therefore they became phonies in the eyes of Holden. The one thing that made him feel less lonely was when he met Phoebe. Allie is also mentioned around the book at times when Holden feels lonely. When Holden had reached the climax point of his mental state, he had a hard time to get across the street. “Every time i came to the end of a block and stepped off the goddam curb, I had this feeling that I’d never get to the other side of the street. I’d just go down, down, down and nobody’d ever see me again”. At this moment when his mental state was lost and his shield down, the loneliness consumed him. At one point he even accepted
