Technologies’ Influence on the Maturing Process of Adolescents & Children We all struggle in the process of becoming mature and in current times, technology has helped us overcome that struggle. In Catcher in the Rye, the main character Holden is rushing into becoming mature by committing illegal acts, while the main characters of Rebel Without a Cause resort to violence as an outlet for their frustrations with themselves and others around them. Society in the 1950s, as seen in Catcher in the Rye and Rebel Without a Cause is different from today’s society because life changing tech advances have provoked children to mature at a younger age, without having to refer to violence and “mature” acts. At the beginning of the film the three main characters are caught up at the police office for their immature actions. Nowadays, getting into trouble with the sheriff or police in your teenage years is not a good sign of maturity and is highly frowned upon. Kids nowadays know the consequences and they learn from their mistakes the first time so they don’t end up in authority offices ever again. Technology informs us that violence comes with many consequences as seen in videos all over the internet. People have the ability to view videos of others committing senseless violent acts and it makes them have no desire to do the same. In a similar fashion, Plato, one of the main characters, has a gun and wants to shoot people in the Griffith Observatory because he is going through a phase of anger and loneliness. Plato is very depressed and lonesome which is quite common for teenagers. He tries to use a gun in a rage of frustration. Technology nowadays provides us with many outlets for our anger, stress, and loneliness. For example, we can facetime, text friends, or call different hotlines if we are feeling down or need to talk to someone. Technology does not only inform us but also acts like a friend. Not only can we talk to our closest friends through it but we can also meet new people through vast social networking
