Catherine Morland, the main character of Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen, is very bland and normal. She isn’t courageous, wild, or timid. I’ve only read a quarter of the story, and I think Jane Austen might have made Catherine like that on purpose. Catherine might become a heroine in the end like she always dreamed of. As of right now, though, Catherine let’s others affect her decisions yet she decides them herself, not doing one or the other. There’s only one big decision she has had to make and it’s between Mr.Thorpe and Mr.Tinley. Mr.Thorpe is a self-centered man that loves her but doesn’t show it because he is so full of himself. Mr.Tinley is an extremely rich, handsome gentleman that also loves her. But the factor that makes this decision so difficult is that Mr.Thorpe’s younger sister, Isabella, is Catherine’s best friend, and if Catherine chooses Mr.Tinley, Isabella might leave Catherine …show more content…

I read Pride and Prejudice earlier in the year and think since they are from the same author, they would be a great comparison because they are very different. Elizabeth is the heroine that Catherine dreams of being one day, but, as said before, Catherine is normal and tries to please everyone, Elizabeth is the opposite (though she would like to please as much as she can), Elizabeth shares her ideas and thoughts to others. For example, Catherine doesn’t tell Isabella that she doesn’t love Mr.Thorpe to please her, but Catherine wants to impress the Father of Mr.Tinley and tries very hard, but when Elizabeth was rejected by Mr.Darcy’s Aunt to marry him, Elizabeth simply told her no, that she was to do what she pleased because she truly loved Mr.Darcy. Elizabeth Bennet will always be my favorite, though Catherine might grow on me eventually, Elizabeth teaches people to stand up for what they love, and more people need to do that rather than please
