he Catholic church had major authority in England during the reformation. The Pope had more power than a spiritual leader would normally have, but the people were accustomed to this. No one questioned the authority, practices, or teachings of the church. Things had been like this for a long time and the people had fallen into a routine. The Catholic church taught that the forgiveness of sins came from buying indulgences and doing goods work. This was completely different from what the Bible said about salvation. Worship was also far from the biblical truth. Communion and musical worship were limited only to the priest and the Bible was read in Latin, a language most people did not speak. People had neither the opportunity to worship among other believers nor the understanding of what worshipping God really meant. Tozer writes in his book, “We need to double our efforts to tell the world that God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” Worship far from this. In fact, what the church was doing at this time shouldn’t even be considered true biblical worship. The church had used worship as a way to steal from the people and assert their authority when they weren’t even educated to teach the word to the congregation. Most priests were barely educated enough to read the Bible, surely they couldn’t interpret it for the people as well. They had traveled far from the truth and they stayed there content, unaware of their ignorance. However, one individual took notice of these flaws and decided to take a
