In this essay I am going to explain how Clarke explores human relationships through the study of two of her poems. The poems that I will be analysing in detail are “Catrin and Baby-sitting”. Firstly, both poems have something in common, which is they both talk about human relationships in our day to day life. Secondly, they also talk the people love and our feeling towards another child. The first poem, that I have chosen is an autobiography and the second poem express of approach to someone else’s child.
“Catrin” is an autobiography where Clarke exposes her relation with her daughter Catrin. This poem has 2 stanzas and 29 lines. The first stanza starts with, Clarke describes what she is surrounded by and what she senses. For instance, Clarke stated in the poem ‘I stood in a hot, white room’ this clearly contrast with the clam and comfortable environment that is expected for childbirth. Furthermore, Clarke also creates an image about their relationship being a ‘red rope of love which we bought fought over’. Clarke uses a lot of metaphors, imagery, personification, alliteration, etc. to give us the image of the place and to set the mood. ‘Catrin and baby- sitting’ are focused about the relationships between two individuals. However, there are few similar to one another in this poem, such as, the fact the whole poem is about the relationship between Clarke and the child. Another point of similarity is the strong emotions present in that particular moment which makes the poem more interesting to read.
