The pool area is warm and the lights have a soft, yellow glow to them. In the background are parents, already in the metal bleachers, ready to watch their kids attempt to swim for forty-five minutes. I dress in a red tie-dye shirt with a large black cross on the back and the words “lifeguard” displayed on the front. Black shorts, a pair of Crocs for shoes, and a black plastic whistle on a yellow string complete the outfit I am required to wear for my job as a lifeguard. As the noise of people talking, the splashing of the water increases, and the warm temperature makes me sweat inside the pool area, most people would tend to get tired and start to doze. The best way to eavesdrop would be to sit in the chair or be as close as you can to the bleachers in order to clearly hear the words that are being spoken. Sometimes they like to gossip about the teachers or some other incident that had happened to them earlier in the week. The most exciting pastime would be to try and judge a parent. Looking at what type of clothing they wear and how they present themselves are always interesting to observe. Some parents look like they had barely managed to crawl from the comfort of their bed, while other parents like to dress to impress their fellow parents that sit with them. You need to take extreme caution when judging a parent as they may catch you staring at them. Under those circumstances, if they do catch you, it is always best to just calmly move your eyes from side to side to make it look like you are scanning the pool for any drowning swimmers. While lifeguarding, it is important to take precautions to stay awake while on duty. Consequently, without a watchful gaze, a swimmer may drown or a toddler running away from their parents may fall into the deep depths and sink to the bottom. It is best to take these preventative measures to stay alert and ensure all occupants of the pool area leave
